Meet the voices shaping the year ahead
Comedian Susan Stewart blends humor and insight to help audiences manage stress, build resilience, and support their mental health. After earning a theatre degree and starting a stand-up career, she faced depression and anxiety that led her to pause performing and work in HR as a learning and development consultant. A successful request to deliver a comedic wellness presentation brought her back to the stage, and for the past 15 years she has spoken full-time about meeting adversity with courage and humour. She is the author of three books and hosts the podcast Still a Hot Mess and the comedy album Relentless.
Dr. Tom Ashley is Chief Medical Director emeritus of Gen Re–North America, retiring from full-time work in 2025 and now serving as a consultant. He studied Biochemical Sciences at Harvard, completed medical school and internal medicine residency at Case Western Reserve, and is board certified in internal, geriatric, and insurance medicine. After 12 years practicing internal medicine and geriatrics, he joined Gen Re in 2000 and has over 30 years of insurance experience. A frequent speaker and author, Tom is past chair of the ACLI Medical Section and has contributed to multiple ACLI committees and AAIM education initiatives.
Val has over 40 years of experience in underwriting and claims, including 25 years as a Chief Underwriter and underwriting fact witness. After retiring from a Midwestern life insurer, she founded VM Insurance Consulting and a separate law practice. She specializes in expert witness testimony, contestable claim reviews, and complex underwriting evaluations, having testified for multiple carriers and the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Val frequently speaks at industry conferences on underwriting, fraud, and red-flag identification. A strong advocate for continuous professional development, she is a longtime member and two-time Past President of the Chicago Underwriting Association and former AHOU Vice President.
Angela Jordan has worked in the insurance industry for more than 20 years and currently serves as Chief Underwriter at Catholic Order of Foresters. Her career spans both direct and brokerage carriers, with experience in Claims and Underwriting leadership.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from North Park University and holds a Master’s Degree in Accounting & Finance Management from DeVry University.
Based in Oak Lawn, Illinois, Angela enjoys spending time with her family, two dogs, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers. Outside of work, she can often be found reading, attending basketball games, playing sports, or coaching her son’s golf team.
Adria is the Director of Transamerica’s Financial Crimes Unit, overseeing the enterprise-wide anti-fraud program across life insurance, annuities, health, and retirement. With over 20 years in the insurance industry, she brings expertise in operations, regulatory compliance, and financial crimes prevention. She leads the strategy and implementation of controls that protect Transamerica and its customers from internal, external, and intermediary fraud. Adria has also advanced the company’s anti-fraud capabilities by promoting data analytics and automated monitoring to strengthen detection and mitigate regulatory, operational, and reputational risk.
Dave is Chief Life Underwriter at MassMutual, bringing over 35 years of life underwriting and new business experience. He joined MassMutual in 2023 after serving as VP of Life Underwriting at CoreBridge Financial, and previously held leadership roles at MetLife and Nationwide, where he began his career in 1989. He holds a BS in Business Administration from Bowling Green State University and an MBA from Ashland University, along with FALU, CLU, and FLMI designations. Dave has served on multiple LOMA councils and as a text reviewer. Outside work, he is a certified USA Track & Field Official.
Thomas Holden is an underwriting leader with nearly 40 years in the life insurance industry. A Muhlenberg College graduate, he holds FLMI and FALU designations and has worked at TIAA-CREF, Swiss Re, Crump, and New York Life, where he has spent 25 years and now oversees underwriting for the Northeast Zone, leading 46 underwriters and managers. He previously served as MUD President and on the AHOU Program Board. A father of three, he is an avid NY/NJ sports fan and active recreational athlete, enjoying golf, half-marathons, and pickleball—occasionally interrupted by hamstring or calf strains.
Chris Woolfolk is an underwriter originally from Cleveland, Ohio, now based in New York. He has been with New York Life for six years and is a team leader on the NYL Northeast region underwriting team, supporting some of NYL’s largest offices and best agents. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Kent State University and an MBA from Cleveland State University. Chris holds several industry designations including Certified FALU and FLMI. In addition to his production work, he is part of internal working groups providing expertise for Underwriting Modernization. In his free time, Chris is an avid traveler and has been to six continents. Antarctica is next!
Ehren Nagel is Head of Actuarial Innovation with PartnerRe where he leads a team supporting client partners in the development and analysis of accelerated underwriting programs and products, random holdouts and post-issue monitoring, and the quantification of mortality impacts. Ehren has experience in Stat and GAAP Valuation, Financial Planning and Analysis, and Life Product Development. He has a passion for data visualization, predictive modeling, and automation.
Denise Bates is Head of Life Underwriting at Guardian Life Insurance, bringing over 40 years of underwriting experience and more than 20 years in leadership. Since rejoining Guardian in 2021, she has driven innovation, operational excellence, and the development of automation technologies. Denise is known for guiding teams through underwriting change, strengthening stakeholder partnerships, and simplifying processes to enhance the customer experience. She is deeply committed to the value life insurance provides to families and businesses. Outside of work, Denise enjoys beach travel with her husband and dogs, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and growing family.
Jeff Heaton, Ph.D., is Vice President of AI Innovation (Data Science) at RGA, leading enterprise generative AI initiatives and chairing RGA’s AI Council. He led the development of AskRGA, the company’s first GenAI assistant. Jeff is also an adjunct instructor at Washington University in St. Louis, teaching graduate courses in deep learning, generative AI, and predictive modeling using Python, PyTorch, LangChain, and AWS. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Nova Southeastern University and a Master of Information Management from WashU. Jeff is the author of multiple AI books and lead developer of Dynaface, an AI facial symmetry tool created with Johns Hopkins Medicine. He frequently speaks at IEEE, SOA, and industry events, drawing on 20+ years of insurance and AI implementation experience.
Dr. Tro Kalayjian, DO, is a nationally recognized physician, researcher, and health
entrepreneur whose personal journey exemplifies chronic disease reversal. Once
weighing over 350 pounds and living with obesity, hypertension, and prediabetes, he
reversed these conditions without medications or surgery. Today, he leads Toward
Health, a tech-forward practice delivering personalized, lifestyle-driven care backed by
peer-reviewed research, helping patients improve health, manage chronic disease, and
reduce medications through sustainable changes in nutrition, movement, and mindset.
Erik leads the dissemination of Club Vita’s insights and analytics across its US, Canadian and UK geographies. He began his career as a mathematician, working at a number of universities around Europe, while moonlighting as a part time street performer. He transitioned to the world of actuarial science in 2011, retaining his passion for engaging communication, training first as a pensions actuary with Mercer and Hymans Robertson and later specializing in longevity analytics with Club Vita.
Erin McClintock is the Sr. Director of Underwriting Innovation at Nationwide Financial. She is leading innovative solutions to maximize accelerated underwriting capabilities through the complex data universe. She is applying her passion to help increase automation in the accelerated world while managing key vendor relationships.
Erin’s experience in Life Insurance is in both direct and reinsurance. When in reinsurance, Erin consulted with clients on automation, acceleration programs, new product designs, leveraging predictive analytics and how best to use data in underwriting. Erin also managed vendor relationships and scouted for insuretechs to partner as alternative data sources.
Dr. Brad Heltemes is Vice President and Medical Director of R&D at Munich Re Life US, a role he has held since 2018. He supports mortality research, provides medical underwriting consultation, contributes to client support and education, and evaluates medical and technology trends. Board certified in Internal Medicine and Insurance Medicine, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Insurance Medicine.
With 25 years in insurance medicine, he has been active in industry organizations, currently serving as President of the Midwestern Medical Directors Association and previously holding multiple leadership roles, while frequently publishing and presenting on mortality and underwriting.
Melissa is a Medical Director with Protective Life. She has over 25 years of life insurance experience, blending expertise from her background as an underwriter and registered nurse. She’s known for delivering engaging, educational presentations at underwriting seminars, making complex topics both clear and enjoyable.
Lori-Anne Walker is VP, Chief Underwriter at Highland Capital Brokerage, bringing extensive underwriting and leadership experience since beginning her career in 1987. She specializes in high-net-worth, older-age, and capacity cases, informed by roles at multiple GAs, including more than 21 years at Crump and nearly two years as VP of Underwriting at Premier Brokerage. Lori is pursuing her FALU designation and serves on the LIBRA and Nationwide BGA underwriting boards. She is a former President of TCAHOU and a member of the Brokerage Underwriting Forum. Based in Minneapolis, she enjoys travel, wine, pickleball, and time with her three children.
Byron Rasmussen is VP of Underwriting at Simplicity Group Holdings with over 35 years in the life insurance industry. He began his career with a LIBRA agency in Des Moines in 1989, later joining a Salt Lake City agency that became Crump, where he remained until 2018. He then joined Allegis Advisor Group and became a Simplicity partner after its 2022 acquisition. Byron holds a BS in Finance and the FALU and FLMI designations, and has also been a licensed life and health agent and Series 6 representative. He enjoys camping, hiking, gardening, and time with his family.
Bryan Simmons is the Head of Underwriting for Modern Life, a tech-forward, full service, Brokerage Agency. Modern Life specializes in the large case market, impaired risk underwriting and uses their proprietary technology to provide advisors fast, more reliable advice.
Bryan has 25 years of underwriting experience leading various underwriting departments in Large Case, High Net worth/profile clientele. He specializes in jumbo markets, complex underwriting, and advisor advocacy. Bryan has a knack for simplifying the complex and partnering with carriers to negotiate cases resulting in higher placement ratios.
Bryan was in the Marines for 8 years, achieving the rank of E6/Staff Seargent, and enjoys various sports and fishing.
Jessica Caracofe is Director of Underwriting Innovation at MIB, where she advances industry-wide solutions to detect anti-selection and fraud and helps develop modern underwriting technologies, including rules engines that enhance risk assessment and efficiency. Before joining MIB in 2021, she worked as a Registered Nurse and spent 15+ years in life insurance distribution specializing in impaired risk underwriting and supporting marketing, education, strategy, and industry initiatives. A recognized thought leader and frequent speaker, Jessica has held multiple AHOU leadership roles and currently serves as marketing co-chair for SEHOUA.
